Propriety and Moderation
“That the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation…” – 1 Timothy 2:9![]()
Here we read Paul’s instruction through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit regarding Christian women, daughters of God, professing godliness. He is specifically addressing the manner in which we clothe ourselves. Paul clearly states that we are to dress modestly (decently and orderly), with propriety (humility; avoiding anything shameful) and with moderation (self-control of passions). What a timely passage for us to reflect on.
It is impossible to not notice the promiscuous apparel that is sold everywhere, and worn by girls and women of every age. But we as Christian women, who want to honor our Father in every way…must be careful to not overlook this command, to adorn ourselves in a way that reflects a pure heart with pure motives.
Romans 12:2 tells us: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Now that we are the Lord’s daughters…what is acceptable according to this world's standards, is no longer acceptable to us. Our minds are now being “renewed” according to God’s Word…His standard of holiness and purity. Our outward appearance and apparel should reflect our new hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Our highest desire should always be to glorify God…never to bring attention to ourselves!
When we dress improperly and indecently we dishonor God. When we allow our daughters to dress this way…we and they, dishonor God. How important it is that we lead by example! Dear sisters, here are a few things for us to consider:
1) We are to be chaste/pure and to teach the younger women to be/do the same. (Titus 2:5)
2) Our bodies should not be exposed (which many do through way of cleavage, tight and short clothing, etc…) to anyone but our husbands. (Hebrews 11:4; 1 Corinthians 7:4)
3) We don’t want to stumble our brethren in any way! Let us consider their purity also. (Romans 14:21)
Ladies above all… may the clothes we choose and the way we adorn ourselves be modest and pure, because of a pure heart and longing desire to please our loving Savior, who died for us, that we should be righteous and pure in Him!
May I suggest that if and when we shop for apparel…we stop and ask: “Will this be pleasing to God?” If not…it doesn’t matter how cute and colorful and inexpensive it is…I don’t want and need it!
May God bless you, sisters!
In His love, Cindy Lopez
